Maintain a Clean Hard Drive

Good computer maintenance includes cleaning your disk regularly

The key to maintaining the speed and prolonging the longevity of your computer is to keep a well maintained hard drive. This can be done by cleaning the drive a regular basis to ensure it never gets too cluttered up with unnecessary data.

Removing old, outdated files is a good start, as is deleting outdated emails and anything that may be filling up your email trashcan or your Recycle Bin. In addition, a good cleanup of your cache, internet cookies, temp files can go a long way. Other things that can help you achieve a cleaner hard disk include removing unused programs and cleaning up any outdated data files (documents, images etc) left lying around. With those files that are not entirely outdated, but that are not often accessed, a good idea might be to zip them up or move them to a portable storage device or external hard drive.

The fastest and simplest way to do all of this is to use software that's designed specially to find and remove these types of files, although you will very likely find there's no software package that cleans up everything you need to. Some hard drive cleaners are programmed to clean up your system files, Recycle bins and so on, while others may be more specialized, such as a program that cleans your hard drive of inappropriate material.

With so many cleaning tools available in the market today, a clean hard drive is not an impossibility - which is just as well, because it certainly is one of the necessities of keeping your computer performing well.
